Our mission is clear: FAVOR Piedmont promotes long-term recovery from substance misuse disorders through peer-based recovery support services, education, advocacy, and recovery support services, resulting in healthier individuals, families, and communities
Recovery is a journey toward reclaiming one’s life, health, and future. The need for effective substance misuse recovery support services has never been greater. Substance use disorders affect millions of individuals and families across the nation, leading to devastating personal and societal consequences. Without the right support, many find themselves trapped in a cycle of relapse and despair.

Our recovery programs are designed to address the complex challenges that come with early recovery, offering hope to those who feel lost. We believe that with the right resources and support, every individual has the potential to achieve lasting recovery.
Our approach to recovery is rooted in compassion, evidence-based practices, and lived experience in recovery. We believe that recovery is possible for everyone.

We actively advocate for policies and programs that support recovery at the local, state, and national levels.
Community education and outreach is key to reducing stigma and increasing awareness about the nature of addiction and recovery.
FAVOR Piedmont organized in December 2005 when Dr. K. Michael Laughlin, a retired physician and person in long-term recovery, along with a few friends, founded Faces and Voices of Recovery – Tri-County (FAVOR Tri-County). Their vision was to create a compassionate community where individuals struggling with substance misuse could find hope and healing through peer support. In 2006, recognizing the power of collective advocacy, FAVOR Tri-County joined other recovery organizations to form FAVOR SC, amplifying their efforts. Notably, they successfully advocated for and achieved parity in insurance coverage for mental health and substance misuse in 2008. These early successes laid the foundation for the comprehensive services and advocacy work that continue to define FAVOR Piedmont today.
As advancements in brain imaging revealed how substance misuse and recovery affect the brain, FAVOR Piedmont recognized the need to educate the public on the brain's resilience and capacity for healing. This shift in focus elevated education within the organization’s initiatives. Dr. Laughlin, supported by his wife Linda, spoke at numerous professional conferences, emphasizing that addiction is a treatable chronic health condition. His openness about his own recovery journey added weight to his message, demonstrating that recovery is possible for millions. Today, FAVOR Piedmont leads in substance misuse recovery education, offering evidence-based peer support to individuals and inspire community change.
FAVOR Piedmont is positioned for significant growth and expanded reach. We are walking side-by-side with other recovery community organizations, peer support specialists, communities, and thought leaders all over South Carolina to advocate for normalizing recovery and de-stigmatizing addiction.
FAVOR Piedmont’s mission is to provide hope, healing, and recovery support to people in and seeking recovery from substance use disorders and their families. Every step we take is guided by our commitment to making a positive impact on individuals, families, and communities. Whether through peer support services, advocacy, harm reduction, or education, we are here to promote long-term recovery and create a brighter future for all.
